– Kimberly Evans, AAIMM Doula

What does being a doula mean to you?

Being a doula means to me, holding space during one of life's most sacred transitions - the birth of a new life and the rebirth of families. It is my commitment to be fully present, to witness and honor the power, vulnerability, and resilience of birthing people.

One reason a family should consider having a doula?

We bring calm, comfort, and encouragement every step of the way, making the experience more supported, less stressful, and truly memorable.

Please share a story of one of your most memorable experiences as a doula.

One of my most memorable moments was supporting a single mom through the birth of her first child after IVF. With no other support, it was just the two of us, and when her baby was born, she hugged me through tears and said, "We did it, Kimberly, we did it together".

What’s the most powerful or meaningful part of being a doula for you?

It is powerful and meaningful when I know that I truly made a difference in a families life. That my presence and guidance created a beautiful memory for others.

What’s one game-changing way a doula can support a family during birth and beyond?

By assisting the family with creating sacred spaces in the labor and delivery room, postpartum recovery and in their home, and then reminding them that within these spaces they love on each other as much as possible.

What’s one unforgettable moment from your journey as a doula that still sticks with you the today?

A continuous unforgettable moment is each time I come into the birthing space or doctor's appointment with my Black clients and the staff assumes we are related. I respond with, "I am the Doula" and the surprise and then admiration shows on their face. One time a doctor said what a beautiful name "Iamdoula" and I had to explain "No, I am the Doula"! (Mind you we do wear uniforms).
